Bottleneck's Second Release . Late Nights, Early Mornings (2003)

"Magic and beauty pour out of Bottleneck's music. On the band's beautifully moody sophomore release Late Nights, Early Mornings, they mesh together effortlessly to create the complete picture of an act that's confident in it's own sound and willing to embrace diverse influences in order to achieve
it." The Calgary Sun

"Bottleneck displays a dazzling ability to write and execute country music in the classic sense with the flair of jazz and blues." The Regina Leader Post

"A thoroughly impressive release. Combining classic country song-writing with some modern Britpop savvy this Vancouver quartet has quickly become one of the best-loved outfits on the left coast. ... a richly textured 13-song album..." Exclaim! (National)

"Smith and Carrigan offer up a slate of beautiful romantically rootsy originals that move from Tumbleweed Connections roots pop and stark Americana to torch n' twang country."

 The Winnipeg Sun

"There's real hurt in these hurtin' songs. Carrigan has a lovely voice ... reminiscent of Joan Baez, Natalie Merchant, and Patsy Cline. ...a gentle, honest soundtrack for your own sleepless nights and sorry dawns." The Georgia Straight (Vancouver)

"The gorgeous harmonies of Scott Smith and Robyn Carrigan from Vancouver's top twang threat Bottleneck bring to mind the rustic romance of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris - and that's a good thing."

Now Magazine “Top Pick of Country/ Folk, North X North East” (Toronto)

"Late Nights, Early Mornings will be sure to win over the heartstrings of the forlorn. ...think Patsy Cline teamed up with Gram Parsons, backed by a band of tight musicians (Maybe Buffalo Springfield) and that's the starting point for unlocking the band's eclectic C&W sound." Chartattack (Toronto)

"... bittersweet tinges of country and folk." The Record (Kitchener/Guelph)

"Just when you thought the whole alt. country thing had been done to dusty death along comes a band like BOTTLENECK to make you realize you missed a few pages a couple of chapters back. Festival goers would be well advised to catch Bottleneck now before they have to pay five times as much for a soft seater."

Prairie Dog "Top Pick Of The Western Canadian Music Awards Festival" (Regina)

"...songs rich and full of literary beauty ...full of want and wonder"
Umbrella Music (Toronto)

"Bottleneck sure have made some pretty songs. ...moody peaks and valleys weaving threads betweens Smith's more rocking country-based numbers and Carrigan's jazz and celtic influenced contributions." See Magazine (Edmonton)

" Bottlenecks' latest has an underlying sweetness that could be called piquant. ...a beguiling acoustic-based country, folk and blues hybrid." The Vancouver Province

"Bottleneck"
4.5/ 5 Stars
"Here's a big find. . . is a stunner . . . stopped me cold. With a few breaks and major-label attention, Bottleneck could be huge. "

John Lucas - The Georgia Straight (Vancouver)

" Without a doubt, already a candidate for the year's top list. Highly recommended."
Dani Heyvaert - Rootstown (Belgium)

" ...stunning ...phenomenal... a bright, crisp cash crop of rollicking country and roots rock."
Mike Bell - Calgary Sun

"with impeccable production, exceptional songs, and an undeniable chemistry between its principal songwriters, resulting in a calibre of roots music steeped in Americana that most young bands can only aspire to"
Mike Kissinger - Monday Magazine (Victoria)

"If (Robyn) Carrigan's . . . haunting vocals don't send shivers up your back . . . it's safe to consider yourself an emotional quadriplegic, incapable of the beautiful ache."
Leza Maloney - Westender

"Every song on Bottleneck's debut self-titled CD is praiseworthy."
Nancy Lanthier - Vancouver Sun

"Bottleneck deserves all accolades heaped upon them Robyn Carrigan's beautiful voice makes me melt." Spike - Discorder

"The songs are gorgeous, especially "Hate To See You Cry", and the music is rustic and comfortable, like that same old back porch."
Freight Train Boogie - Santa Rosa, CA

"Cool male/female harmony vocals a-plenty and songs which evoke Emmylou and Gram with a hint of Mark Olson for good measure."
Americana-UK

Bottleneck Bio

Bottleneck’s slides Americana and Blues up from across the border and summons Folk and Bluegrass from over the Rockies to form their own brand of classic, laid-back roots music.

Bottleneck consists of two critically acclaimed Vancouver-based singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Nova Scotia native, Robyn Carrigan and Vancouver guitar hero, Scott Smith. With an impressive musical resume, including former backing vocalist for Sarah McLachlan,Carrigan shines on vocals, guitar, accordion, and banjo while Smith masters all things with strings, from blistering blues guitar to shimmering pedal steel as well as adding his own vocals to the proceedings.

Jeremy Holmes adds grace to the electric and stand-up bass while Liam MacDonald's country-via-New Orleans style drumming keeps audiences hips shaking.

When Bottleneck’s self titled debut album was released in February 2002, it was uniformly praised

in the local, national and international press, and their live shows were so well received that Bottleneck received a nomination

for Best Live Act at the Georgia Straight Readers Choice Awards. CBC radio also fell in love with the band as

Bottleneck received airplay on both national programs and regionally broadcast programs across the county,

playing nearly every cut on the album. The bands debut also charted at virtually every college radio station in Canada during 2002.

Bottleneck’s Late Nights, Early Mornings was released in October 2003, on Black Hen Music to instant critical fanfare.
Featuring 13 new original songs, recorded by Steve Dawson (2003 & 2004 Juno Award Winner), and is distributed by
Maximum/Universal Music Canada. The album charted on Canadian college radio from Vancouver, BC to Sydney, NS.

While ripping up the trans-Canada from Vancouver to Montreal, Bottleneck shared the stage with the likes of Big Sugar’s
Kelly Hoppe, Geoff Berner, Carolyn Mark, Rae Spoon, Kathleen Edwards, Martin Tielli, the Undertaking Daddies
and Bob Wiseman. As their tour van keeps eating up the miles, Bottleneck keeps adding to their growing list of reviews,
feature stories, airplay and interviews.

Bottleneck performed a memorable sold out show with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings at the 2004 Juno Fest in
Edmonton on April 3. The two-day music festival was part of the Juno Awards Celebration and served as the starting point for Bottleneck’s spring tour.

Never a band to rest on their laurels, Bottleneck toured once again in June to culminate with the NXNE Festival in Toronto.

When Bottleneck hit the road in August to perform for a number of summer festivals and concert series in British Columbia and Washington State they kicked off the tour in grand style with a capacity crowd in their hometown of Vancouver. In September, Bottleneck embarked on a 21 date tour reaching as far east as Quebec, closing their tour with a command performance at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Calgary, 2004.

In February 2005, Bottleneck joined label-mates, Jenny Whitely, Jim Byrnes, Shyler Jansen, and the Great Uncles of the Revolution for a Black Hen Label Showcase in Montreal for the North American Folk Alliance.

Bottleneck is currently touring and working on material for a third CD slated for recording and release in 2005.
